From Nursery to Agroforestry Phase 2, Nepal

, , , , ,

In the Sindupalchoak region of Nepal, low income from traditional monoculture farming has led to land abandonment and outmigration of farmers. The region faces declining agricultural production due to past chemical fertilizer use, untimely rain, and lack of irrigation. Frequent natural disasters like landslides and soil erosion further hamper agriculture. The NGO Ashabhumi Nepal has initiated a two-phase project supported by BASAID in 2025 (Phase 1) with 11’682 CHF to transform this situation by promoting organic and agroforestry practices, has started to support farmers and established a small Greenhouse Nursery.

The overall project aims to transform barren land into productive farms, diversify farmers’ income, and build agricultural resilience. For Phase 2, the objectives will continue to focus on:

  • Expanding the nursery project to include agroforestry practices
  • Growing 6,000 tree saplings yearly (totaling 12,000 over two years) to supply 500 families with fruit saplings and vegetable seeds
  • Providing organic farming training to farmers
  • Prioritizing young, economically disadvantaged farmers and returnees from foreign employment to revive the agricultural sector
  • Increasing food production, rural economics, and community development

The continued funding for Phase 2 will contribute to:

  • The conversion of 23% of barren land into thriving farms
  • 500 farmers will receive 20 fruit saplings and vegetable seedlings to diversify their land
  • A 25% rise in average household income among participating farmers
  • Enhanced participation of youth and a decrease in young farmers leaving for foreign employment (with at least 10% choosing to stay and work locally)
  • Reduced burden on women and elderly farmers in farming practices, and improved soil quality and fertility.

Phase 2 of the project  will also be managed by Ashabhumi Nepal, an organization founded by Krishna Hari Dulal. Ashabhumi Nepal has been working in the community since 2020, was registered in 2024 as a non-profit, and has collaborated with UNFAO (Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations).

For the second year (Phase 2) of the project, Ashabhumi Nepal is requesting 8’200 CHF from BASAID. This approved funding will support the ongoing expansion of agroforestry practices and related activities to ensure the project’s reach and impact.
