In the underserved neighborhoods of Quito, many young people grow up facing poverty, exclusion, violence, and very limited access to dignified work. Through “Semillas bajo el Asfalto”, BASAID’s local partner Fundación Sol de Primavera helps change that reality by creating concrete opportunities for 30 vulnerable young people aged 15 to 25.
Over 12 months, participants receive practical training in bakery and pastry-making or tailoring and garment-making. But the project goes far beyond vocational skills. It also includes entrepreneurship training, psychosocial support, and learning in human rights, gender equity, and sustainable production, helping young people build confidence, life plans, and real prospects for the future.
The project supports the creation of two youth-led productive units, where participants can apply what they learn in real-life settings, test products, explore sales channels, and gain first income opportunities. Progress is measured through course completion, technical certification, employment or self-employment outcomes, and growing autonomy.
This initiative benefits young women and men living in vulnerable urban areas of Quito, including those affected by school dropout, unemployment, family violence, malnutrition, and social exclusion. By combining skills training with personal support and community-based entrepreneurship, the project helps transform poverty into opportunity.
Its long-term sustainability is strengthened through local partnerships, a reinvestment strategy, and an alumni network that will mentor future groups.
Meaningful education today; dignified work tomorrow.
