In Cochabamba, Bolivia, many women living in vulnerable circumstances struggle to access stable work and reliable income. Through “Women Weaving Their Stories,” BASAID’s local partner Huellas y Futuro offers a practical path forward for 32 women, many of them heads of household. The project combines training in machine knitting with basic business education, helping participants build skills they can use to earn an income and strengthen their economic independence.
A central part of the project is the creation of a women-led knitting association. With shared access to knitting machines, the women can work together, support one another, exchange knowledge, and organize collective production. The project also helps them explore ways to sell their products in local and external markets, opening new opportunities for income generation.
The impact goes beyond economics. The project also helps preserve textile knowledge and traditions that are part of local cultural identity. At the same time, it brings indirect benefits to more than 90 children, as stronger incomes and greater stability can improve family wellbeing.
By investing in skills, self-organization, and entrepreneurship, this initiative helps women move from vulnerability toward dignity, resilience, and greater economic independence. It is a practical and hopeful step toward a more secure future for women, their families, and their communities.
