Sheep Rearing Program for Dalit Women, India

, , , ,

The mission of the NGO “Dalit Welfare Association” (DWA) is to give the poor population in rural areas the opportunity to generate income.

60% of the population in the Kurnool district in the state of Andhra Pradesh live from agriculture and the Dalit in particular work there as migrant laborers without owning land. In addition, child labor is common in brick kilns and spinning mills and women mainly work in sago factories for extremely low wages and under exploitative conditions. The poor working conditions and low hygiene standards pose an additional threat to the situation of the Dalit population.

DWA will train 20 Dalit women in sheep farming and the marketing of meat, milk, leather and fur. Sheep farming is a good option in the dry areas with short reproductive cycles and will enable the women to create a small business as the foundation for an economic livelihood for themselves and their families.

BASAID is supporting DWA in this program with CHF 2,430.
