The NGO Digambarpur Angikar runs various shelter homes for 400 socially disadvantaged boys and girls in the state of West Bengal. The residents have come to the homes as orphans, victims of human trafficking, domestic violence or child marriage. The homes are also home to 50 elderly people.
Meals are provided in the homes by buying food from local markets which is very expensive. And the quality of the bread and baked goods often does not meet the desired quality standards.
As soon as the female residents reach the age of 18, they have to leave the home. In order to offer these young women vocational training and an opportunity for future employment, the organization would like to set up a small bakery. In addition to training the young women, the baked goods produced are intended to ensure high-quality nutrition for the home residents and generate income by selling them on the local market.
BASAID has supported the Digambarpur Angikar shelter homes in the past with the construction of a solar system and a system for clean drinking water and will contribute CHF 9,400 to the bakery project.
