The project addresses the urgent need for livelihood opportunities for marginalized scavenger women in Masapeta Slum, Kadapa City, Andhra Pradesh, India. These women face significant challenges due to poverty, social exclusion, and a lack of employable skills, often relying on degrading and low-paying daily wage labor.
The objective of this project is to train 50 marginalized scavenger women for 8-months in sewing and embroidery and subsequently support them for further 4 months in establishing a home-based business with their sewing machine to ensure a successful business launch.
This is expected to improve family income for approximately 250 indirect beneficiaries, reduce dependency on scavenging and daily wage labor, and increase their social status, confidence, and inclusion. The project aims for long-term self-employment, financial independence, improved education, health, and dignity for their families, ultimately breaking the cycle of poverty and marginalization.
The project is managed by LEADS (Legal Education Awareness Development Society), an organization established in 2001 that works to empower marginalized communities, particularly Dalits, women, youth, and children. BASAID will support this project with 9,400 CHF.
