Children Welfare Association, Kinderheim, Pokhara, Nepal

Goal:  The goal of the project is to build up the infrastructure of the CWA Childrens Home for orphans and abandoned children in Nepal and to support the environment of the Childrens Home so that current and future children can grow up in a healthy and safe atmosphere.

The CWA Childrens Home is refuge for 21 children in the age range 4-17 years who are growing up in a protected environment with the security of a family atmosphere.  The home was founded by the Nepal couple, Thak Bahadur and Ganga Devi Sunar.  In 2002 Barbara Rentsch, a primary school teacher from Riehen arrived and as volunteer realized that without foreign support the Home for the children was not obtainable.  Since then, Barbara shares with her husband Peter Vecker the responsibility for the needs of the Childrens Home.

They both spend much time in Nepal and take care for the safety of the children and the overall organization of the Childrens Home.  In Switzerland they give presentations, sell handcrafts and collect donations for the continuous needs of the Home.  Along with the healthy nourishment and the medicinal treatment of the children and their workers, Barbara and Peter made it possible to move into a larger house.  They have built their own water line, installed a carbonite-water filter and acquired two water-buffalos for the daily fresh milk needed for the children.  The government school education consists of classes of more than 100 children and with unqualified teachers, but thanks to the donations from Switzerland the orphan children are able to attend a private boarding school with smaller classes and English as instruction language.

In 2005 the Childrens Home introduced a simple book keeping system.  The leader of the Home sends monthly receipts for checking against withdrawals from the account so that the payment transactions are transparent.  Barbara Rentsch and Peter Vecker work trustworthy and pay their own travel costs to Nepal themselves. Through their commitment they guarantee that the monetary donations are not paid for administration costs and that 100% of the donations go to the benefit of the children. In 2008 they established the Friends for Children Welfare Association, Switzerland with headquarters in Riehen. Since then these common aims have been registered and recognized by the Cantons BS, BL und ZH.
