What is "BASAID"?BASAID is the employees' development aid association. The foundation of BASAID goes back to the initiatives of Heini Striebel in 1978 for the Ciba association "CIBAID" and Hans Zihlmann 1979 for the Sandoz association BASAID. In 1996 the 2 organisations decided to combine their resources.BASAID is the contraction of "basic aid" and reflects the philosophy of the association, to offer development aid that meets basic human needs. BASAID has a dual objective: to enlist the sympathy and support of company employees for development aid, and to channel that support into concrete manageable projects. How does BASAID operate?BASAID plans and carries out projects in the Third World, calling on the experience and skills - scientific, technical and administrative - of its members.Whenever possible, the association works directly with a local partner in the country concerned. Only where absolutely necessary are other Swiss or foreign institutions involved in BASAID projects. Where do BASAID's priorities lie?BASAID's budget is modest, the optimal use of these resources is therefore an absolute must. This translates into the following guiding principles:
How is BASAID financed?BASAID's funds are made up of contributions by members, financial support from the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, as well as donations and income from special events such as the Christmas bazaar. All in all the association has an annual budget of approximately 400,000 CHF.The allocation of funds to the various projects is decided by the General Assembly. The planning and execution of the projects is the responsibility of individual members who, as project leaders, form part of the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee is the guarantor that the funds are employed in an optimal manner. |
